Producing more local food

Penney Hames has a passion for local food. ‘Last month some of us took a look at the Farnham Local Food Initiative - an acre of land just outside Farnham where local people have been growing their own vegetables for the last year. Some people help to grow, others give money or business expertise, and 25 families bought into a weekly vegetable share. Next year’s harvest will be twice as big and mean that twice as many families can benefit. They also make enough to pay a part-time grower, generating employment in the local community. I thought it was brilliant: ordinary people making something happen, getting back to the soil and eating chemical-free vegetables that have travelled no more than a mile or two between ground and plate. Food as it should be.’

‘I wanted to bring the idea to Alton and Holybourne. I’ve been up and down the High Street over the last few weeks asking people what they think about Alton growing its own vegetables and fruit and I’ve been knocked off my feet by the response. People love the idea. At the moment most of the local farm land is pasture but what if there was one farmer willing to go into partnership with the town and commit to growing just for us? It’s been done in Stroud; it could happen here.’

If you have a comment, idea, suggestion or offer of support (including sponsorship - none of this can happen for nothing) give Chris Chappell a call on 01420 544422 or email The Campaign would love to hear from you.

Good gardening produces four times as much food per acre as farming does.
