This is the Train Fare Increases Page.

Our transport system plays a crucial role in our society and economy.
We have to balance the requirements of the economy and society with the needs of the environment.

Still further Increases of up to 6.8% in South West Train Fares from January 2nd 2009.

How long will these increases continue well above the rate of inflation?
The government has truly lost its way on Transport (and other matters?!).

Do look at the cumulative effect of all these rises over the years.

Further Increases of up to 4.8% in Train Fares from January 2nd 2008.

These are all return fares to London Waterloo. These increases are well above the rate of inflation.

Passenger Focus has a web page on these latest rises
here.

Increased Offpeak Train Fares from May 20th 2007 of up to 20%.

These are all return fares to London Waterloo.
South West Trains claims that these increases are to redistribute passengers more fairly over the trains. In this case they would be revenue neutral but clearly they are not with SWT making a substantial second rise in train fares this year for some users.

Off-peak train passengers now suffer an extra 20% fare increase on services arriving in London between 10 am and 12 noon. These increases are on top of the above-inflation annual rise in January 2007.

Fares are now divided into Standard, Cheap Day for trains arriving in London on weekdays after 10:00am and Super Off Peak for trains arriving after midday on weekdays and all day at weekends and bank holidays. For the reduced fares, the time of the first available train is given. These fares increased further on January 2nd 2008.

StationStandard  Cheap Day  Super Off Peak
Alton£26.108:44£19.0011:15£16.30
Basingstoke£29.009:17£16.4011:17£16.30

Winchester£43.408:55£27.4010:54£23.90
Winchfield£25.209:05£16.3011:05£14.40
Reading£24.008:42£13.0010:42£12.90

Do note that for Basingstoke and Reading stations, the difference between the two non standard rates is just 10p. Maybe competition is good for SWT?
The Super Off peak for Alton and Basingstoke are the same despite the Standard fares being £2.90 different. The earliest Super Off peak train from Bentley leaves at a very late 11:51. The cheap day fares from Basingstoke, Farnham and Winchfield are very similar but the standard fares vary considerably.

Does the Government really want to discourage car use and transfer people to the greener forms of travel?
Passenger Focus has a web page on these increases here. The rises are described as unexplained, unjustified and unfair (but they have still happened.)
